Hello 2019! It’s been a week and I still can’t believe its a brand new year. Every time January rolls around, I feel this overwhelming pressure to create a “fresh start,” “to get organized,” “to be healthier.” It seems that every website, every social media post, and every article is telling me to follow the mantra, “New Year, New Me.” Honestly, there is enough pressure out there coming at us from all sides to be someone that we’re not, to be perfect, to have it all together and the start of a new years is one of those times where I feel like it’s even more overwhelming. I personally like myself and while I could probably be more organized, or actually take the laundry out of the dryer the first time its run, I don’t feel like I need to become a “New Me” in 2019, so this year I did not make any resolutions. Not a single one. To me, a resolution has no leniency, you either did it, or you didn’t, which frankly, almost always makes me feel a little bit worse when I don’t accomplish it. This year I decided to focus on a few goals that I want to work towards. That simple shift in focus, means that at the end of the day, if I worked towards the goal, I made progress. It’s a more forgiving attitude that makes achieving them so much realistic.
So here’s what I’m thinking for my 2019 goals. Some of them are things that I already have started but plan on continuing into 2019, some are newer, some seem a little bit lofty but over all, I’m really excited about where 2019 is headed.
Be More Personal
I love writing, its one of the reasons that I started the blog and thanks to some new shifts in life, I’ll hopefully have more time to do it. There are enough fashion/beauty blogs out there, and while I do love both of those things and will continue to write about them, I honestly live in sweatpants and comfy sweaters, so my goal is to be more personal in my writing. To discuss the good, the bad, and how finding your way as a 20 something is really hard. This is something that has been on my heart for a while, but I want to build this platform into a community for young women who are just doing life and to help create a space for them to come and be with like minded individuals.
Read 32 Books
Originally I wanted to make this '“Read 52 Books,” because 1) I love reading, 2) it would be a book a week, 3) how awesome does that sound, but I am in school for my MBA and work full time so realistically, it just wouldn’t happen this year. So I took 20 books off my list and gave myself a few weeks of leeway.
This is one of those things that I have struggled with this winter. I was doing great over the summer and fall when it was warm but as soon as that colder weather hit, I was curled up in my bed as long as possible. I love doing barre and am a much nicer person when I work out because endorphins. So my goal this year is to stick with it and to do 2 to 3 days a week.
2018 was a hallmark year in regards to finances. I started really focusing on personal finance and took a business finance class for school so I set myself up to learn how to be financially independent, negotiate a salary, and learn how to keep to a budget. For 2019, my goal is to work on investing. Women invest 40% less than men and so my goal this year is to invest more and set myself up for my financial future.
Take More Pictures and Print Them Out
I’ve always loved pictures. I think that having the ability to capture moments when they are happening is almost magical. For Christmas, my grandmother gave me a photo album to put pictures in and so this year, my goal is to take images of what I am doing, who I am with, and to print them out so that I have physical copies that I can go back to look at. We have all this digital technology but I can’t remember the last time I scrolled through my photo album on my phone so in 2019, I’m taking it back to paper to document whats important.
